PHOTOS: Dolly Parton and Her Husband Carl Dean

Carl Thomas Dean, the husband of Dolly Parton, has passed away at 82. The couple, who married in 1966, led a private life with Dean staying out of the spotlight while supporting Parton’s career.

Parton shared the news on Instagram on March 3, 2025, saying, "Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy."

A Private Life Together

Dean, born in 1942 in Nashville, led a quiet life outside of Parton’s fame, focusing on his asphalt business. The couple met in 1964 when Parton was 18 and quickly formed a close bond. They married in a small ceremony in 1966, with Parton later calling it the first and last marriage for both.

While Parton’s star rose, Dean remained in the background. Parton explained their love was "sweet and good," and she valued their privacy. Dean inspired her hit song “Jolene,” though he was never bothered by the attention other women paid to her.

A Lasting Love

Parton often joked that the secret to their long marriage was "stay gone," referring to the time spent apart due to her career. Despite their differences, their bond remained strong, with Dean supporting her behind the scenes. Their shared moments, like flower deliveries and poems, showed their deep affection.

Carl Thomas Dean is survived by Parton and his siblings. His passing marks the end of a nearly 60-year love story, one of quiet devotion and lasting partnership.
